On the ground floor of Eisenbahnstraße 23, behind the window with the lettering „HeldInnen Raum“, the child and youth work of Forum Kreuzberg e.V. takes place. In the house everyone simply says „Schülerladen“, the children’s club, or „Schüli“ for short. The offer is inclusive and easy to reach: children and young people from 6 to 14 are welcome, with and without a history of migration or flight, with and without disabilities.
Heroes of the four elements
The pedagogical concept revolves around nature and the environment, told along the four elements. Each project year is devoted to one element: first earth, then water, then air and fire. The children go exploring in the neighbourhood and the courtyards, investigate their surroundings and ask: what kind of surroundings do I live in, and how do they become my environment?
In the second module, „Held:innen wie wir“, heroes like us, the children meet people who work on the elements artistically, scientifically, politically or socially. The younger ones build recycling projects and structures for protecting birds, the older ones approach things documentarily and experimentally. What comes of it is shown in annual exhibitions; a combined exhibition of all four elements is planned for December 2026.
From everyday life
Recently there was an action week on the theme of fire: the children cut fireproof pots out of tin cans, warmed wax in them and burned names into wooden boards. Anyone looking through the window usually sees the next project already taking shape. Parents are involved through conversations, exhibitions and weekly offers for parents.
