Housing allocation

The Forum is not allocating any flats at present. The waiting list is closed and is not taking new names.

This applies indefinitely. We cannot accept speculative applications, cannot put anyone on a list and cannot keep enquiries for later.

We put it this plainly because the friendlier version helps nobody. Over the past years hardly any flats have become free. People who live here stay: that is the point of the model, but it also means that hardly anyone can move in from outside. Keeping a list on which nothing happens for years would be a promise we cannot keep.

How allocation works when it does happen

Flats at the Forum do not go on the open market and do not go to the highest bid. If a flat does become free, the working group for housing allocation decides according to criteria the community has set itself: the need for housing, the family situation and the question of whether someone fits the particular building and courtyard. Income and origin play no part. As a rule people move within the Forum first, when families grow or children move out.

Anyone living at the Forum is a member of the co-operative and not a tenant. What that means is explained under Co-operative living.

What is possible instead

The Forum is more than its flats, and the larger part of it is open to neighbours:

  • The Vorratskammer is actively looking for members, including from the neighbourhood
  • Commercial space becomes free occasionally, enquiries go through the working group for commercial space
  • Guided tours of the courtyards and shared spaces, enquiries through the contact page
  • Theatre, exhibitions and festivals under Aktuelles

The network of young co-operatives in Berlin lists projects, some of which are still building and are therefore actually taking on members.

If anything changes about the waiting list, it will appear first under Aktuelles.
