Not every flat at the Forum has a balcony. What there is instead is the roof. On the shared roof terrace at Eisenbahnstraße 21 the urban gardening group tends a garden that offers a retreat to people without green space of their own, and to birds and insects along the way. In summer it should be in bloom, as the group’s own description puts it.
The work is seasonal. In spring and autumn beds are built and prepared, in summer a watering rota governs irrigation, twice a day when the roof is in full sun. Shared and individual beds are planted, seeds and furniture bought together. Communication runs informally through a messenger group.
Incidentally the garden is carried not only by those who water it: some members support the project financially without gardening themselves, and are thanked in summer with a share of the harvest.
