Bees

Two or three bee colonies live on the roof, and in summer there is a harvest. The bee group looks after them.

There are bee hives on the roof of the Forum. The bee group looks after the colonies through the whole bee year. From October to April frames are cleaned and soldered and the bees treated against the varroa mite; from spring onwards there is feeding and care of the honey frames. From May to July two people check the swarm cells every seven to ten days: where is the queen? Is there swarming activity?

The high point is the joint honey harvest in June or July, four to five hours of work and the highlight of the bee year. For the group it is about more than honey. It wants to deepen awareness of pollinators in the courtyards and in the city. An annual open day with a tour of the colonies and honey tasting is planned, ideally together with the summer party. The group is in touch with the Kreuzberg beekeepers association.
